This year (and many years after) the your child will be participating in the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium... also known as SBAC.
The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) is a state-led consortium working to develop next-generation assessments that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Smarter Balanced is one of two multistate consortia awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Education in 2010 to develop an assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by the 2015-2016 school year.

To take the practice test, go to http://sbac.portal.airast.org/
* click "Practice and Training Test" (in the green)
* click "Student Interface Practice and Training Test" (in the green)
* click "sign-in" (don't worry, you don't have to give any personal information. You'll be a guest.)
* Select Grade 3
* click "yes"
* click "Start G3 Math" OR "Start G3 ELA" Do not select Start G3-5 Math or ela
* Ignore all the choices, scroll down and click "Select"
* Ignore all the choices again, scroll down and click "Yes, start my test"
* Click "Begin Test Now"
* Good luck!
* If you want to take the other Grade 3 test (either Math or ELA) then you'll have to repeat these directions, and select the right subject at the 6th step).
